St Breward is a granite quarrying village high on the moors, with a Norman church built from local stone. There are also walks to ancient stone circles.
St Breward has the highest pub in Cornwall, at 825 ft, located 3 miles from Hendra Farmhouse across the Camel river. This moorland inn has a bar which dates back 1,000 years to when it was a beer house for the builders of the nearby church. In addition to this bar, which has beams and slate floor, there is the main bar, likewise slate-floored, and with part-exposed stone walls and a granite fireplace and a games room with a pool table. Picnic benches are set out in the walled garden. Tools, traps, horse-brasses and slate paintings, the latter for sale, enhance the pub's rural character, while a piano and live country and folk music on some evenings add to the friendly atmosphere generated by a mix of locals, among them farmers and walkers. Ruddles, Wadsworth 6X, Bass and John Smith on tap, to
complement home cooked dishes from the menu, like the pub's speciality,
moorland grill. Also served are blackboard specials and snacks all very
good value for money as well as desserts like banffi pie. |
